Navajo Police Department Sacks Officer After Drunk Driving Arrest And Bicyclist Death0
On September 29, 2017, it was announced that the Navajo Police Department had officially fired a Navajo office after he was arrested for driving drunk and hitting and killing a bicyclist. The incident occurred a week ago. 30-year-old Kevin Hevel was arrested on charges of manslaughter, DUI, felony endangerment and failure to stay at the scene of an accident causing death.
Last week, an officer spotted a red SUV sideswiping another SUV. Occupants of the second vehicle were not injured. Hevel’s car continued onward and eventually hit a bicyclist traveling westbound. The cyclist, 50-year-old Peter Ranking, was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the accident, Hevel fled the scene. He ran a red light and eventually crashed into a marked police vehicle leaving the officer with minor injuries. Hevel had been with the Navajo Police Department since November of 2007. Police Chief Phillip Francisco insisted that Hevel was in good standing with the department and was not known to have problems with alcohol.
Glendale Police Vehicular Crime Detectives have taken over the investigation.
