Man Arrested For Rantoul, Illinois Liquor Store Robbery0
On Wednesday, it was announced that a Rantoul, Illinois man had been arrested in relation to a violent armed robbery on Tuesday night. Rantoul police offers were dispatched to the Liquor Locker on 820 East Champaign Avenue around 9:15 PM, after the owner reported a robbery involving three men.
Rantoul police believe that the robbers sprayed the owner in the face with pepper spray. Then, another man rushed behind the counter and began punching the man with his fist. He was armed during the assault. The owner attempted to defend himself, while being struck repeatedly.
During the struggle, a third robber grabbed a bank bag. All three men fled the scene shortly thereafter. It is estimated that the robbers netted around $2,000. The owner suffered minor injuries, but refused medical attention. During the course of the investigation, officers were led to 21-year-old Anthony Terrell Johnson, who resided in the 300 block of South Steffler Street.
They quickly discovered that the man was wanted for parole violation. He had been sentenced to prison for a 2012 robbery out of Lake County. The man was immediately arrested. After watching the surveillance video at a later time, they felt that Johnson was the man assaulting the liquor store owner, while armed.
A search of Johnson’s apartment led to the recovery of a handgun, cash and clothing that police believe was used during the robbery. The man will be charged formally on Thursday. Rantoul police are still asking the public to come forward with information regarding the robbery.
